Are election officials statewide following these best practices?

Every voter has the option to mark a paper ballot by hand or with an assistive device and verify their vote, so that there is a paper record of every vote cast.
Every machine-counted result will be double checked using publicly observable, rigorous post-election audits of the paper ballots.
Every election office and voting system is up to date and emergency plans are in place should any system run into problems on election day.

I am writing to express my concern about the threat of hacking and computer error in our current voting system.

What steps are you and our state elections director taking to address the election security crisis? What steps have you taken since the 2016 and 2018 elections?

The election security crisis has simple solutions.

Software can be hacked, but paper can be used to check any problems with the electronic voting systems from registration systems to vote counting machines.

There are simple solutions that can help protect the vote everywhere:

1)	Voter-marked paper ballots – marked by hand or with an assistive device for voters with disabilities. These can be counted by scanners, audited and recounted if necessary.

2)	Rigorous post-election audits – audits should take place before any election results are certified, a small percentage of the total paper ballots need to be recounted by hand to check the machine vote count to detect computer errors or hacks.

3)	 Recovery Plan – should there be a hack or error affecting e-pollbooks or voter registration systems, we should have paper backups of voter registration systems  and train pollworkers so that no one is turned away on election day.

4)	Election security upgrades for election offices and training for election officials.

These simple protections are not fully in place in most states in the U.S., and I am writing to ask you to protect the vote in our state by supporting the above reforms as needed, and helping allocate funding to make them a reality.
