Dear Toyota CEO Koji Sato,
Gas-powered vehicles, including hybrids, drive climate change and have devastating impacts on public health. We must move away from gasoline and diesel engines in the next decade to solve the climate crisis. In the U.S., the transportation sector is the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions.
As the world’s largest automaker, Toyota has the opportunity to shift the industry toward a fossil-fuel free future. Toyota must bring clean, electric vehicles to market and phase out polluting models starting now. That means producing new electric vehicles of all types, advertising to support their sales, and investing in charging infrastructure.
We are calling on you to:
phase out internal combustion engine vehicles in the U.S. and Europe by 2030 and globally by 2035;
align lobbying with the goal of phasing out internal combustion engines;
require 100% renewable energy use throughout your supply chains globally by 2035;
by 2025, sign a procurement commitment for fossil-free primary steel and commit to source 100% fossil-free steel by 2050;
require responsible sourcing of your battery minerals, and develop battery design that allows for easy reuse and recycling of minerals;
establish a clear commitment to Indigenous Peoples’ right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent, which should be extended to your suppliers; and
Commit to ensuring suppliers respect and protect workers rights to a living wage and to forming a union.
While Toyota continues to market itself as a sustainable company, your refusal to prioritize EVs and your ongoing opposition to strong climate policies tell a different story. Stop greenwashing. Commit to an electric future today.
