Support IRS Direct File

The IRS is inviting every state and DC to participate in Direct File — an online tool that allows eligible people to file their taxes directly with the IRS for free.

IRS Direct File was a great success when it was piloted in 12 states earlier this year. But tax preparation companies will pressure your leaders to reject the IRS’ invitation.

I’m writing to show my support for the IRS Direct File program.

Like most people, I want it to be as easy as possible to do my taxes — so I am happy to hear that the IRS Direct File pilot program worked well in 12 states this year. Now it’s time for the program to expand, and I want you to partner with Direct File for the 2025 tax season and beyond.

Allowing IRS Direct File would mean that we would have a free public option for online tax filing software. And it would mean that fewer people would be stuck using what tax preparation companies provide.

I know that many people in my area would benefit from using IRS Direct File. Please accept the IRS’ invitation to participate in Direct File and coordinate with the IRS so that people can have a seamless experience using Direct File and filing state returns as well.

I'm also concerned that Congress could cut IRS funding or block spending on Direct File. In addition to working with your administration and the IRS on Direct File, please also urge Congress to protect funding for this important program.
