Austin Energy is about to bring a new rooftop solar program to the Austin City Council. This is an important step in decarbonizing our energy supply, but the Solar Standard Offer program won’t live up to its potential without a change to the rate the utility is proposing to pay for local solar energy. Austin Energy wants to pay customers 23% less for rooftop solar energy in the Solar Standard Offer program than it currently pays customers for energy from rooftop solar.
This program has the potential to be the backbone (along with local batteries) of a truly clean energy future for our city. We can avoid a new polluting gas plant if we choose solar and batteries instead. But it won’t work if Austin Energy is undervaluing solar.
Send an email to Mayor Watson and the Austin City Council now to ask for a fair rate for solar that will put us on a path to clean energy.
