The Austin Energy Resource, Generation and Climate Protection Plan sets goals and a vision for our city-owned electric utility. It’s where you find renewable energy goals, energy efficiency and demand response goals, local solar goals, energy storage goals, and decarbonization goals – including commitments to shut down fossil fuel generation (Austin Energy’s portion of the Fayette coal plant and the utility's gas plants). An update to the plan has been in progress for a year and a half, but Austin Energy has yet to share a draft. But what the utility has shared isn’t promising.
Austin Energy’s proposal includes adding more polluting methane gas generation in East Austin.
The Austin City Council will vote on the final plan on December 12.
Please send the Mayor and Council an email now to ask that they reject any plan that doesn’t build on the goals in the existing plan to increase deployment of clean energy and reject fossil fuel expansion.
