Even for a regime that seems to average about three Watergates a week, the sudden demolition of the East Wing of the White House is viscerally shocking. And unprecedented. And possibly illegal (though it’s not clear whether anyone has standing to sue about it).
As if we needed another metaphor for the damage Donald Trump is doing in pursuit of his dictatorial ambitions, the American people are witnessing in real time the unfortunate reality that an unhinged maniac can tear down the structures of our government almost overnight. It will take years, or even generations, to restore the literal and figurative pillars of our democracy.
