Tell USPS to oppose privatization, protect vote-by-mail, and expand the services that it offers to the public

To the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors,

Thank you for the opportunity to provide a written comment during this open session, though I hope that moving forward all open sessions will incorporate public comment so that more Americans can have their voices heard regarding the vital work of this cherished institution.

I have several items that I would like your committees to take into consideration:

First, as it relates to the Operations Committee, I feel strongly that the Postal Service must not be privatized. The Postal Service is one of the nation’s most trusted federal institutions because of its universal service obligation to deliver to every ZIP code, no matter if it’s profitable. Private companies will never agree to deliver universal service. They’ll only go where it’s profitable. It is essential that the Postal Service remains public so that it can continue serving all Americans.

Second, as it relates to the Elections Mail Committee, I am deeply troubled that Donald Trump and other political leaders have expressed concern about vote-by-mail. But I know that postal workers work hard during every election season in order to safely and securely deliver and return mail-in ballots. It is essential that the USPS resist any changes to your role in delivering ballots that would compromise voters’ ability to easily participate in every election.

Third, the Operations Committee should work to offer expanded services to the public. Postal banking, for example, was very popular when it was widely available. There are still plenty of people who don’t live near banks or don’t have a lot of money and can’t access them. Since there are post offices all across the country, you should expand postal financial services so that people who can’t easily use banks right now still have access to banking services like low-fee ATMs, money transfers and check-cashing.

Please consider these priorities to ensure the critical work of the Postal Service is protected and expanded and make sure the USPS is as helpful as it can be for the American people.
