Tell your state senator to protect California’s elections

The California State Senate is considering a bill (SB 970) that would allow many people to vote over the internet — and the Senate could vote on it within days.

This bill would threaten the integrity of California’s elections because online voting is unsecurable and vulnerable to malfunction.

Please urge your state senator to oppose insecure online voting and support safe, effective election accessibility efforts instead.

I’m reaching out because I want California’s elections to run as smoothly, safely, and securely as possible — and SB 970 would make our elections less secure by allowing many voters to submit their ballots online.

Making elections accessible is vitally important but online voting is not secure. It’s vulnerable to hacking and malfunction, and it’s very difficult to correct any issues without redoing the entire election. In 2021 in Sydney, Australia, for example, three contests had to be re-run due to an election day crash in their limited online voting system — and they have not used internet voting since then.

Secretary of State Weber has even spoken out against this bill, saying that an internet voting system would “seriously damage the security of our election system and undermine public confidence in our elections”.

Protecting the integrity and trust voters currently have in California’s elections is essential to protecting our democracy. Please do not support SB 970 and do not support online voting.
