It is time to close the gap between your climate promises and the real world impacts of your AI data center expansion plans. Communities around the country are standing up to oppose local air and noise pollution, data centers' drain on critical water resources, our exploding power bills, and the prevalence of dirty energy to power the buildout. Your reckless plans are undercutting humanity’s ability to rein in climate impacts before they spin out of control.

On paper, you and your peers have made lofty climate pledges, including commitments to be net-zero by 2050 or before. In practice, you are driving fossil-fueled power demand to new heights. Most AI datacenters are powered by fossil fuels, in some cases including coal, the dirtiest fuel. The buildout is driving an unprecedented wave of gas power plants while less than a quarter of data centers are powered by clean and cheap renewable energy.

But the biggest betrayal is your work with big oil companies such as Exxon Mobil to help them find more oil faster with proprietary AI models. To aid and abet the expansion of the industry driving us to the climate brink is a slap in the face to future generations. It shatters any claim you have to serving society at large.

You can’t have your climate cake and eat it too. Either you admit you are working in cahoots with Big Oil to accelerate our collective advance to climate devastation, or you can regain some credibility by taking the following steps regarding AI data centers, at a minimum:

- Consult with local communities early and often and restrict the use of NDAs.
- Commit to power your data center facilities with 100% renewable energy, paired with on-site or grid-connected storage. 
- Phase out the use of existing on-site fossil backup generators.
- Refuse any new fossil fuel infrastructure to power your data centers: no new gas pipelines, new gas interconnections, and on-site fossil fuel generation. 
- Disclose any fossil fuel expansion-enabling contracts: publicly report whether you are selling AI-driven tools or services to fossil fuel companies for the purpose of expanding fossil fuel production.

These are the bare minimum safeguards to ensure the AI data center explosion does not become the biggest climate threat of our generation.
