Tell State Lawmakers: Data Centers are Sucking Texas Dry

As a concerned Texan, I ask you to seriously consider the impact that data centers are having on water resources in Texas.

Communities across Texas are facing drought even as new data center proposals demand millions of gallons of our precious freshwater resources. A recent Gallup poll found that seven in ten Americans would oppose a data center in their community.

I know that people from communities across Texas will be testifying about how data centers have hurt their communities. I urge you to listen to this testimony and consider what you can do to protect communities. Some of the strategies you might consider are:

-- Give local jurisdictions including counties and groundwater conservation districts greater authority over water allocations and other resource use issues.

-- Require water reporting to the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) for large water users, including data centers.

-- Require less water-intensive cooling technologies, use of reclaimed water, and other strategies to limit water demand.

-- Require transparency in dealing with communities and local lawmakers, including by banning the use of nondisclosure agreements, especially regarding matters of public concern like resource use.

I am concerned that time is running out for communities across Texas. There are already hundreds of data centers in the state, with hundreds more proposed. The next legislative session will be too long for many communities to wait. Please consider these issues with the urgency that your constituents demand.
