On May 21, the Austin City Council voted to approve the purchase of fossil fuel electric generation equipment for Austin Energy without disclosing any information about the contract (cost, company, delivery dates, specific equipment) and has refused to even disclose how the members of the City Council voted.
This contract was negotiated outside of any transparent process, despite requirements in the Austin City Charter and Texas state law that require cities to do competitive purchasing.
What we do know is that Austin Energy stated that purchasing and installing 400 megawatts of gas-burning peaker power plants will cost about $1 billion.
The climate crisis is worse than ever and driving up the cost of living and loss of life, and the Ausitn City Council is voting in secret to expand the city’s use of fossil fuels.
Join us in demanding to know which council members voted to support this boondoggle so that we can hold them accountable.
