Tell Congress: Protect consumers from Trump’s attacks

On Thursday night, Donald Trump fired the three Democratic commissioners who held the majority on the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

This is a major step in another of Trump’s dangerous plans: To eliminate the CPSC entirely.

The CPSC’s work negotiating recalls, creating new safety standards, and educating the public benefits all Americans — and the agency plays a particularly large role in reducing injuries and deaths among vulnerable consumers, including children and older adults.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission plays a vital role in keeping my family and community safe — so I’m worried by the idea that it could be shut down soon.

By setting safety standards for everything from toys to baby products, appliances, and electronics, the CPSC saves lives and prevents injuries. This work shouldn’t be controversial — it’s a small agency and protects everyone, regardless of their demographics, politics, or location.

I’m asking you to make a public statement opposing these firings and any attempt to close the CPSC or to move it under the control of other overwhelmed government agencies — which would have the same effect as shutting it down. If the CPSC is shuttered or prevented from acting independently, our community will be less safe as a result.

Please tell the Trump Administration to keep its hands off the CPSC! The CPSC is a valuable, bipartisan agency and should be allowed to continue its important mandate to protect the public against unreasonable risks of injury associated with consumer products.
